Why it's best to be the weakest among the strong

I've mentioned before that I have people from all walks of life in my choirs.

I have professional musicians and singers... But I also have singers who have never sung before.

What unites all of them is their  willingness to learn.

That's why I work even with people who can't sing.

About 15 years ago one young man told me that he wanted to quit because my expectations were "too high."

"Don't worry, Nikolay" I told him. "My expectations are high for the choir as a whole. I make comments to my singers (in private) only knowing their strengths and limitations.  When a singer is a professional, then I do expect a lot more from them."

Nikolay decided to give it a try. So he stayed. And then stayed a little longer. He's been there for 17 years. And today he is part of the core group that sings patriarchal services in the Moscow Kremlin (the main cathedrals of Russia).

Why am I telling you this?

Because I want you to know that with God's help and your willingness to work - everything is possible.

Nikolay used to be an absolutely terrible singer. But he never gave up. He continued to work and sing. He did what he was told. He got over his fear. And he got his reward.

So don't be afraid to work with people who are better than you.

When it comes to your skills and spiritual life, it's much better to be around people who know more than you. It's best to be the weakest among the strong, than the strongest among the weakest. Because this way you will grow.
